FAMILY RAFTING · FRENCH ALPS · FROM AGE 8

Rafting is one of the rare outdoor thrills that parents and children can enjoy together, in the same boat. But from what age can kids take part? Which river should you choose for a first family descent? And how safe is it, really? Here is everything you need to plan a family rafting day in the French Alps.
Why rafting is a great family activity
Rafting puts everyone in the same boat — literally. Children and parents paddle together, follow the guide’s calls together, and share the same splashes and laughter. It’s a rare activity where age and fitness matter far less than teamwork, and where a first-timer of eight and a grown-up experience exactly the same adventure. For a family holiday in the mountains, few outings create memories like it.
From what age can children go rafting?
As a rule, children can raft from the age of 8, provided they are comfortable in water and can swim. On calmer sections that’s the standard minimum. The more committing rivers and rapids require children to be older — often 12 and up, sometimes more depending on the water level. The most important thing is to match the run to the youngest paddler: tell us the ages in your group and we’ll pick the right descent.
Which river to choose for a family?
We run rafting on three bases, each with a different character:
- The Isère (Savoie) — an excellent river for a first family descent: playful, readable rapids and a great introduction to whitewater. See our complete guide to rafting the Isère.
- The Dranse (Haute-Savoie) — a livelier, more sustained river, better suited to older children and teenagers looking for more sensation.
- The Morvan (Burgundy) — a gentler, natural setting, ideal for younger families and a first taste of the water.
Safety: what you need to know
- State-qualified guides. Every raft is led by a professional guide who adapts the trip to the crew and the conditions.
- All gear provided. Wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet are included and fitted for children.
- The right river on the day. The section is chosen according to the water level, so the difficulty always matches the group.
- A safety briefing before every descent. Everyone learns the basics — how to paddle, how to hold on, what to do in the water — before setting off.
The one firm requirement: children (and adults) must be able to swim and have no medical contraindication.
The best time for family rafting
The season runs from June to September. For families, July and August are often ideal: steadier flows and warmer water, perfect for younger children. June brings the biggest volumes thanks to the snowmelt — great for teenagers after more action. The exact run is always decided on the day, based on the level.
How to prepare your family rafting day
Keep it simple. Bring a swimsuit (worn under the wetsuit), a towel and a change of clothes, secured footwear that can get wet (old trainers or water shoes), and something to drink. Leave valuables and phones behind, or use a waterproof bag. Arrive a little ahead of your slot for kitting up and the briefing — and let the guides do the rest.
Combining rafting with other family activities
Rafting pairs beautifully with our other outdoor activities for a full day or a weekend: canoraft, a gentler inflatable-canoe descent, tree-top adventure courses, canyoning for older children, and more. Ask us and we’ll build a family programme around the ages in your group.
